On Wednesday, 27 April we lost our beloved and respected colleague, Ola Omikunle.
Ola joined the Volunteer Centre in 2006, and worked in our New Opportunities team throughout her career with us. She enabled and empowered hundreds and hundreds of people affected by poverty, inequality and marginalisation to develop themselves, secure and maintain paid and unpaid work, create new, nourishing relationships, and so build better lives for themselves and their loved ones. The foundation of Ola’s method was an understanding that we need love and self-esteem to grow.
We can increase our self-esteem by setting goals for ourselves and achieving them, and when we start from a difficult position we might need a mentor, a coach, a teacher, or a friend to take the journey with us. Ola was able to be all of those things when that was what the person she was working with needed, always showing that she had faith in each person’s ability to change their life for the better, and committed to sticking with them through the challenges and set-backs we all experience.
Ola was a remarkable person, her passing was totally unexpected, and our team cannot be as it was without her. SInce her passing we have spoken with more and more people whose lives she touched, each with stories of Ola’s devotion and kindness, as well as the stubbornness and determination she needed to make such a difference, all of which have given us comfort. We are considering ways of memorialising her that Ola would have found appropriate – if you would like to contribute, please do so here.
