The Value of Getting Outside, Meeting New People, and Socialising

Stepping outside – whether into a local park, a community garden, or on a walk through the city – has a way of lifting our spirits. Fresh air, a change of scenery, and the company of others can make an enormous difference to our wellbeing. At VCKC, we know that spending time outdoors isn’t just about exercise or fresh air – it’s about creativity, connection, and belonging.

This summer, two of our projects have been helping people do exactly that: bringing communities together through gardening and walking.

On the left, a woman sits at a table smiling while looking at a plant pot on the table which she is holding. On the right, a woman looks down at the pot she is holding in one hand, while using a marker in the other hand to draw on the pot.

At St Cuthbert’s Centre and the Violet Melchett Centre, our new horticultural project is blossoming as part of our Wellbeing programme. The sessions support people with differences and those living with mental health needs in the south of the borough, offering a chance to get creative with nature. Recently, participants have been designing colourful pots and naming seeds they’ll soon plant, ready to watch them grow. It’s a simple but powerful activity – hands in the soil, pens in hand, conversations flowing – reminding us that creativity and connection thrive side by side. For many, these sessions aren’t just about gardening; they’re about finding joy in small shared moments, building confidence, and nurturing wellbeing together.

Meanwhile, in North Kensington, our Notting Dale Community Champions programme has been leading a series of summer walks for over 50s, in partnership with AgeUK KC. These walks take groups across London to explore some of the city’s most iconic spots, such as Hampstead Heath, blending gentle activity with discovery and conversation. For those who join, the walks are more than exercise – they are opportunities to meet new people, explore new places, and strengthen community ties.

Both of these projects show us how powerful it can be to step outside our routines and into shared spaces. Whether it’s planting a seed in a pot you’ve decorated yourself, or walking through a new neighbourhood with a group of friends you’ve only just met, these moments remind us of the value of slowing down, connecting, and spending time together.

In a world that often feels busy and isolating, community activities like these highlight the importance of human connection. Being outside, being active, and being with others can boost not only our physical health, but also our sense of belonging and joy.

We are grateful to everyone who has joined and supported these projects so far – from participants to volunteers and partners. Together, we are creating spaces where people can thrive, grow, and connect. Because ultimately, wellbeing isn’t just about looking after ourselves – it’s about nurturing each other and the communities we share.
