I Am Just A Girl: Making A Difference

Hi, I am Sristi! I joined Volunteer Centre Kensington & Chelsea last summer (2023) to relaunch the Market Ambassadors programme. Every Saturday, you’ll find me out on Portobello Road and Golborne Road markets, where our amazing volunteers help visitors find their way around, stay safe as they explore the vibrant stalls, unique shops, and enjoy the allure of Notting Hill’s famous sights.

The Market Ambassadors programme offers a flexible, low-commitment opportunity for people to give back to their community, connect with others, and support local businesses. Whether it is a stepping stone to more involvement or just a few hours making a difference, the programme showcases how volunteering can enhance both personal and community well-being. In collaboration with RBKC’s Street Trading Office, we have built a space for people to engage with North Kensington in a truly meaningful way.

Over the past few months, leading this project has shown me the true power of volunteering. It is not just about giving back; it is about building connections—with the local community, with each other, and with ourselves. I am always curious to hear why people choose to volunteer and how they found their way to us. In a world where we are all hustling towards our own goals, it is easy to forget about giving back to the places and people that shape us. That is where volunteering steps in—it is a beautiful reminder of how much we can contribute to our communities.

The North Kensington markets, like the iconic blue door from Notting Hill, bring together people from diverse backgrounds, symbolizing a love that transcends social and economic boundaries. Just as the blue door represents the union of different worlds, our Market Ambassadors break down barriers by connecting individuals with varied goals and backgrounds through a shared mission of supporting local vendors. As Leo Buscaglia wisely said, “We often underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

I am incredibly proud of the diversity and inclusivity within our volunteering group. Our team is enriched by people from various backgrounds, experiences, identities, and abilities. We have welcomed exchange students from California, refugees from Sudan, Haiti, a 17-year-old student from Germany and India, and even a businessman from China, all of whom joined us to explore the market and immerse themselves in the local culture. Each volunteer brings their unique energy and perspective, enriching our work and making it all the more fulfilling. Volunteering not only allows people to develop new skills, make friends, and build confidence, but also fosters a deep connection with the community while enhancing both mental and physical well-being. Some volunteers come to us right after university, seeking work experience and hoping to make a positive impact on the world. Others join us simply to give back to their community. As Gandhi wisely said, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Whether you are looking to build your resume or make a meaningful contribution, volunteering with us offers a fulfilling way to connect with others and enrich your own life.

During Volunteers’ Week, we celebrated our team’s dedication with coffee, cake, and certificates of appreciation. We pitched our programme at the Great Exhibition Road Festival, connecting with even more people passionate about supporting local businesses through volunteering.

Our Market Ambassadors programme stands at the intersection of volunteering and supporting local businesses. If you would like to experience the magic of these markets for yourself, we would love for you to join us for a few hours on Saturday.

As Elizabeth Andrew beautifully put it, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
