Connecting Through Gardening: Celebrating Community Garden Week

As spring arrives and community spaces begin to bloom, Community Garden Week invites us to celebrate not only green spaces, but the people who help them grow.Organised by Cultivation Street, a national campaign supporting community gardening across the UK, the week shines a light on the power of growing together. At the Volunteer Centre, we see every week how volunteering in a garden can offer so much more than tidy flower beds or fresh herbs. It’s a way to reconnect – with others, with nature, and often with yourself.

Through our Wellbeing volunteering programme, we support people to take gentle steps back into community life. For some, that starts with a pair of gloves and a morning spent planting alongside a friendly group. Gardening gives people a chance to contribute, to feel needed, and to see the impact of their efforts – without the pressure of having to be anything other than themselves.

Why Gardening?

Gardening has a quiet kind of magic. It helps ease the mind, slow down racing thoughts, and lift low moods. The simple act of tending to plants can bring calm and clarity. It offers a sense of routine and purpose without pressure. Being outside, even for a short time, can improve sleep, boost confidence, and gently encourage movement. And it creates space to feel part of a group, even when you don’t feel like talking.

In a city that moves fast, a morning in the garden can be a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.

Our Gardening Volunteering Programmes

We organise volunteers for two regular sessions for Wellbeing clients looking to ease into volunteering in a calm, supportive setting:

Tuesdays, 11am–12.30pm, arranged by The ClementJames Centre
A relaxed nature and gardening group, where you can enjoy working outdoors with others.

Wednesdays, 10–11am, in partnership with the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team
An opportunity to help care for a vibrant local green space while connecting with friendly neighbours and volunteers.

No gardening experience is needed – just a willingness to give it a try. We’ll bring the tools and support.

Let’s Grow Together

Community Garden Week is a great reminder that you don’t have to go far to find something meaningful. A small patch of earth and a group of kind faces can be the starting point for something quietly powerful.
