This April feels like the perfect moment to begin something hopeful.
As the days grow longer and signs of spring appear, I’m really excited to introduce Climate Champions, a new initiative as part of the Future Neighbourhoods 2030 programme, proudly led by Volunteer Centre Kensington & Chelsea in the north of the borough.
Climate change can sometimes feel like a distant or overwhelming issue, but the truth is, many of us are already noticing its effects in our daily lives. From hotter, drier summers to warmer, wetter winters, and even the flooding we experienced in July 2021, these changes are happening here, in our community. That’s why Climate Champions is all about local people coming together to make a real, practical difference where we live.
At its heart, this project is about connection. It’s about neighbours meeting neighbours, sharing ideas, and working side by side to improve the places we all care about. Whether it’s creating greener streets, supporting biodiversity, growing food locally, promoting reuse and repair, or encouraging walking and cycling – every small action adds up.
One of the things I’m most excited about is that you don’t need any prior experience to get involved. We’ll be offering free training and learning opportunities, including Climate Action Training and Climate Fresk sessions, so you can build your knowledge and confidence along the way. It’s as much about learning together as it is about taking action.
April is also home to Earth Day, a moment each year when people around the world reflect on how we care for our planet. It feels especially meaningful to be launching Climate Champions at this time; a chance to turn those reflections into local action, right here in North Kensington.
For me, this project is about building a community that feels connected, resilient, and proud of where we live. By sharing skills, supporting one another, and taking small steps together, we can create neighbourhoods that are not only greener but also stronger and more prepared for the future.
If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, I’d love to hear from you!
