As we approach International Volunteer Managers Day on November 5, it’s a moment to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions of volunteer managers around the world. This year’s theme, the “Future Normal,” invites us to imagine a world where volunteering is more accessible, inclusive, and impactful – a world we’re actively working to create.
My name is Moska Saidy, and as the new Volunteering Development Coordinator at VCKC, I’m thrilled to be a part of this vision. My role is to support organisations in implementing best practices that help volunteers feel welcomed, confident, and valued. One example is our new Plinth platform, which connects organisations and volunteers in a streamlined, user-friendly way, ensuring that anyone who wants to make a difference can find their place.
However, we know there are many barriers that may prevent someone from stepping into volunteering- barriers like self-doubt, limited availability, a lack of relevant opportunities, or inaccessible places and spaces for people with additional needs. A big part of my work will be helping organisations break down these barriers, increasing access, offering guidance on how to create a more inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to participate.
Our trustees here at the Volunteer Centre play a critical role in guiding us through this journey. They shape our strategies, ensuring that we remain responsive to our community’s needs while setting a strong foundation for future growth. Their expertise allows volunteer managers and coordinators like me to focus on building the “Future Normal” – where volunteering is accessible to all, and everyone can see a place for themselves.
As we celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day, let’s honour the commitment of those who drive change—from the managers on the frontline to the trustees working behind the scenes. Together, we’re creating a future where volunteering really is for everyone.
