Maria’s Story

I moved to London in 2015 to pursue my career in Public Health. Once I came, I started searching for jobs and volunteer opportunities and shortly I found out about Volunteer Centre Kensington and Chelsea when I attended a free NHS training and since then I have been volunteering.

In 2016 I happily joined the team of Community Champions, it was a great opportunity to gain knowledge about Public Health Campaigns and Community Research and also to know better the local community and the local services. Exactly what I was looking for! Carrie, the Community Champions project manager and the Volunteer Centre staff made me feel very welcome from the start and helped me feel like a valuable team member that can ask easily for support and assistance.

As a Community Champion, I took part in the various community events where I enjoyed meeting new people with different social background, cultures and religions from whom I have learned a lot about health and wellbeing issues. All the events were full of fun, joy, inspiration and recognition!

I gained experience and confidence in doing health surveys at various locations to reach targeted communities. It was great to work alongside other volunteers, they also were very enthusiastic. It is a rewarding feeling to volunteer and to do something that benefits the community.

I am now more confident to apply for a job in Public Health field due to my volunteer experience and training and I am looking forward to applying for a master’s degree in the same field.

Once again, I would like to say thank you to Carrie and the whole team for all their support and encouragement!
