Barriers and Solutions in Engaging People with Learning Disabilities in Volunteering and Employment

website opportunities 23

The seminar will engage stakeholders and service users in Kensington & Chelsea who have or could have an impact in supporting people with learning disabilities. It will provide a platform for exchanging best practice in community work and will ensure that we will provide an enriching experience for all participants.

The seminar aims to:

  • Facilitate an open dialog with stakeholders and service users in order to explore solutions available to overcome barriers in involving people with learning disabilities in voluntary and employment work.
  • Open a discussion around skills, training and support needed for people with learning disabilities in order to increase their access to voluntary work in the community and employment.
  • Enable people with profound and multiple learning disabilities to be supported in gaining meaningful voluntary roles.

Since 2005 Stepping Stones has made volunteering support services available to people with learning disabilities in Kensington and Chelsea.

Throughout 13 years we have worked with organisations in the borough and have seen the significant impact voluntary work can have on volunteers and the organisations.

We would like to find even more opportunities to support people with learning disabilities who want to volunteer in the community.

As part of this process we will continue to:

  • Develop the skills of people with learning disabilities through training and volunteering opportunities.
  • Proactively seek out and work with volunteer organisations in Kensington and Chelsea to demonstrate to them the advantages of recruiting volunteers who have learning disabilities.
  • Work in partnership with our stakeholders, to ensure that volunteering is for everyone.
